The beginning of my experiment started at the end of the school year. I posted these on facebook:
May 20th Sarah Varley Is trying to cook a 1950's menu to see if it will save money.
May 21st Sarah Varley Just cleaned her kitchen. And when I say cleaned I mean took everything out of the fridge, drawers, cupboards rearranged everything according to Martha Stewart and Real Simple and scrubbed everything down!!! Tomorrow I conquer the Rest of the House (Except the twilight zone that is my walk in closet, that undertaking will happen after school gets out.)
May 22nd Sarah Varley Spent about $68 between Aldi's and Walmart to begin my 1950's week of menu's experiment. I forgot two things: tomatoes and a cookie crust. I'm pretty sure this will provide me with meals for the next week and a half if not longer. The experiment begins
Today's Menu: Breakfast: French Toast w/ Syrup and Juice. Lunch: Fried Potatoes and eggs with Carrots and Cookies. Dinner: Cheese Soufle (I'm scared of making a soufle...about as scared as I am of making pies!!!!!!!) Beans and Strawberry Shortcake (making cupcakes so I can alternate throughout the week) My cold is getting worse.
Breakfast was easy and didn't take a lot of time. I decided to use my Mrs. Butterworth instead of my good Maple Syrup...something about using a bottle shaped like a maple leaf if I ever have company, makes me want to save it. :P Lunch was a little more difficutl. I didn't start the cookies soon enough. :( So I'm waitin...g one more hour for them to refrigerate before I can cook them. I actually used this recipe for my eggs and potatoes: http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Fried-Eggs-with-New-Potatoes-Bacon-and-Spinach-5363 though I didn't have spinach. Would have been better with spinach. I kinda felt like a man eating potatoes eggs and bacon for lunch...but I DID have carrots!!!
And ALDi's and Walmart WINS!!! as much as I HATE Walmart, I just stoped by Sunfresh to pick up those last items, spent more than I spent at Aldi's and got half the stuff?! Ummmm THAT's where my money has been going!!! Wish I could support my neighborhood grocery store...but we're in a recession here people!
Okay...soufle didn't rise or poof or whatever you call. Apparently, non stick pans do not allow soufle's to poof. Also. I didn't beat my egg whites to hard peaks. I beat them to soft peaks. I think they are supposed to be hard peaks. Eating my desert for the night.
May 23rd Todays Menu: Breakfast: Coffee Cake and Cereal. Lunch Peanut Butter Sandwiches with Bananas and Cookies. Dinner: Was supposed to be meatloaf, BUT I hate touching red meat so I'm going to put that one off until SOMEONE (my boyfreind ♥) comes over to mix it up for me so instead I'll have leftovers of noodles in a cream s...auce with tomatoes and my leftover strawberry shortcake from last night.See More
June 12 When your bacon doesn't fit in the frying pan... Is the pan too small or the bacon to large?
Conclusion: Cooking like this DID save me money, but it DID NOT help me lose weight.
So now I'm on a diet, trying to lose the weight I gained in this experiment and then some. 4 meals of 400 calories a day. Can I do this on Retro Recipes?
