Suggestions for Christmas Shopping

IJM Gift of Freedom 2010 from International Justice Mission on Vimeo.
Tom Davis Posted this on beliefnet.com a couple of weeks ago. He recently posted a video about the same topic. I like it!!! Good Job TOM!!!  I took his challenge and started researching Christmas presents with proceeds that benefit victims of sex trafficking. You can put things under the tree AND contribute to the abolitionist foundations at the SAME TIME!!!!!! You can also add some of these beautiful gifts on your own Christmas list.
Awesome and beautiful Christmas Presents proceeds go to Human Trafficking Victims.

Cool Looking T-Shirts at Exoduscry
T-Shirts, Jewelry, Bags, Stickers and Books at the Sold Project
EVERYTHING from Toys to Rugs, beautiful Jewelry and purses at the Emancipation Network, made by survivors.
Hand Cream and Tote Bag to Benefit Somaly Mam at The Body Shop

Shoes Against Sex Trafficking at Shoe Revolt
Fashionable Clothes and Accessories at Stop Traffic Fashion
Chocolate, Coffee, Crafts and More at the Global Exchange
Food and Coffee at Fair Trade Exchange (I highly recommend purchasing fair trade chocolates and coffees because a lot of our "normal" products like Hershey's and nestle use slave labor to procure the cocoa beans)
Bag and Necklace at the SET boutique
T-Shirts DVDs etc. at GEMs

For that person that's hard to shop for, you could also make a donation to a foundation in your loved ones name!

Happy Christmas Shopping!

Learning the Art and Heart of Hospitality

One of the things I feel like God is working on inside of me in my time of hermitage is how to develop relationships and friendships.
At church, they are constantly preaching about hospitality and friendship. On my reading list the other day was the book of Philemon. I thought, "The WHOLE book of Philemon?!" and then...I couldn't find Philemon, 'cause it's so small and tiny, it's tucked in between Titus and Hebrews that it almost disappears. Well, I read it, and well...quite frankly, I felt like God was speaking directly to me through Paul, some thousands of years later. I don't know if that's weird or not. I have heard of stories where God speaks to people rather profoundly and loudly so that they have no doubt in their mind whether or not it's God or if it's their own piddly brain playing tricks on them. There have definitely been moments in my life that I was pretty sure that it was God speaking directly to me, and it freaked me out!! I honestly don't know what I would do if it was as profound as SOME people's encounters with God!!
Anyway, so, if you'll forgive my craziness, I ended up reading the book of Philemon feeling like God was directly speaking to me.
Among other things, that are kind of personal at the moment and I do not want to publish for the whole world to see, was verse 22 "And one thing more: Prepare a guest room for me, because I hope to be restored to you in answer to your prayers" (You can read the rest of the book here)
There are several other places in the bible that discusses hospitality, but I just happened to read this one the other night.
I'm not going to lie, I was never really taught how to keep house, I'm a pretty good cook, if I do say so myself, but I have no one to share my creations with...I have been working with FlyLady.com and it has helped me control my house in ways I've never been able to do before. I am, by definition, a messy. I'm still working on how to organize tech weeks and the piles of dishes, laundry and trash that stack up when I come home and just want to pass out. So last night, I cleaned. It's not all perfect yet...but it gets better and better every day.
and then...I began reading SetApart Magazine this morning (the Nov/Dec edition just came out yay!) with the request of Paul in my mind.
Well Leslie Ludy's little boy had turned 2 and usually, on her kids birthday she puts a little photo shoot of her kids, and today she left the quote from Winnie the Pooh in her Photo Shoot " Silly Bear, you can't stay in your corner of the Forest waiting for others to come to you. You have to go to them sometimes."
And so...is my affliction many times, I convince myself that other people don't want to be around me, because they don't come to me, but I don't go to them either! Silly Bear!
And I continued to flip the pages, anxious to read what Leslie has discovered about hospitality. You can read the first part here, and the second part here.
The Reidinger Alumnae House at Saint Mary's
I went to St. Mary's College in Notre Dame IN, and it used to be, way back in the day, that in order to graduate, you had to pass a homemaking test. You would live in this little cottage called the Reidinger House (which by the way is SO cute!!) and you would live there for a week with a couple other woman, being in charge of the upkeep of the home. Now, I almost feel like I should have passed a similar test before I graduated because in some aspects I am pretty much clueless, and being single does not allow me to ask for help in such instances as throwing a load in the wash, or doing the dishes and I do not know a lot of women who ARE single or HAVE been single for a long period of time, who can teach me the art either. I do find some things inspiring, Real Simple Magazine makes me feel absolutely out of control of my life, but sometimes they have helpful solutions. Domino Magazine used to be my favorite, but they went under after the recession. I do have an article from them saved that I have found practical, and helpful.  I have to type up the list 'cause it's no longer on the internet either!
how to run a perfect household (sans staff) by Cynthia Kling Domino May 2008 pg 76
Figure Out Your Hosting Style, and amass the essentials. I'm into tea parties, so I invested in an Eva Zeisel service from Crate and Barrel. When I see someone coming up the driveway, I'm good to go.
Make A Home Bible, Part 1: List all emergency number, plus those for workmen, pet sitters etc. Part 2: Catalog every major household job, and which month to do it in. Part 3: Create a list of food staples, organized by supplier, then make 10 copies to stick on the fridge. Whoever is going shopping-or ordering a delivery-will know exactly what to get and where.
Have Pads and Pencils beside every phone, and in the car, so you're never scrambling.
Fill a Drawer With Petty Cash When something runs out, it can be replaced immediately. Ask the one who uses it (husband, housekeeper, {ha! I wish} babysitter) to leave receipts.
Choose Signature Colors and load up on wrapping paper and ribbon. People will pick out yours in he pile at the bridal shower.(AND it makes it SO much easier and cheaper when you need a ribbon to match your wrapping paper)
Arrange Your Pantry with the products you use most often in front, and with rarely used items in back.
Stash Light Bulbs, Toilet Paper, linens etc., in each bedroom and bathroom, instead of just one central location
Label the Linen-closet Shelves and you'll never mix up the double and queen sheets. Empty shelf space will remind you when it's time to do a load of wash.
Forget about Whites Chocolate-brown towels and shocking-pink napkins are more durable, easier to keep clean and jazzier.
Buy Whatever You Use Frequently in large quantities. It will save you tons.

I have always wanted to be one of those people who had knitters circle on Monday Nights, and dinner with the girls on Weds, and Breakfast with my best friend on Saturday Mornings. Sadly, and book club (actually I don't really ever want to be in a book club...but you get the idea.) Is that just for the "ladies who lunch?" That would be horrible...
I'm a theater person, and strangely, as much as theater has had a bad wrap for being sinful, I believe that it brings me closer and closer to God, the more I understand and look at the human experience. It gives us the ability to examine ourselves and our hearts, without actually looking inward. Which sometimes hurts too much, and then we're faced with it, head on, and we don't have the ability to look away when we relate to a character in a play.
Okay, I promise this all relates. The difference between the ladies who lunch, and the hospitality Paul asks for, is that the ladies who lunch are "lunching" for themselves, for the view that the world has of them, everything is about me! me! me! How can I create crochet circle and dinners and breakfasts and "book club" about God. How can I use my hospitality to "Share (my) faith, so that (I) will have a full understanding of every good thing we have in Christ." (Phil. 6) What does it look like to "Watch over the affairs of (your) household and not eat the bread of idleness" Prov. 31:27. How can I be a lady who lunches, while my lunching shares my faith? And what's up with American Adults? Why can't we seem to make time to make real friends, and true relationships?

Be an abolitionist

I am completely broke and so I haven't done much cooking lately

I DID make a pumpkin bisque which was OH so delicious! Our principals secretary, Sherry helped me with it, it seemed like it was missing something, she threw in a packet of splenda and it was perfect!
I was in such a fall mood I also made some pumpkin ginger bread for my girls gospel community. I was a little nervous because I had never tried the recipe before and i brought it over straight from the oven. A little slap of light canola oil butter and Mmmmm Mmmm good!
Did I mention I've lost 13 lbs now! Whoot! 25 left to go!  I hope to reach a loss of 20 lbs by Christmas. If I do that, I will be the same size I was when I was in college!!

Though today, I wanted to write on a more serious note. On the top of my blog I am putting links to some foundations you can check out to help, if this touches your heart as well, but I wanted to create a list of all of the information I have been able to find on the internet about human trafficking. Please go through the information carefully, lovingly and with a humble heart. My prayer is that God will put it on your heart to help by donating money, volunteering, or simply spreading awareness.

Weekend Cook

I've decided I need to be a weekend cook. The week is much too busy for me to make myself meals and so I resort to fast food restaurants and School Lunches. BLECH!

I just made some whole wheat chocolate chip cookies, some almond crusted chicken strips and I will set up  the crockpot to make pumpkin bisque during the day tomorrow. I have the baked beans and corn and squash. I also have left over corn chowder. I will be making some pumpkin bread as the week goes on as well.

Beans Beans the Wonderful Fruit

I made the baked beans today with the corn and Zuchini Delight. the Corn and Suash delight was really easy and yummy. The baked beans were a little complicated. I'm not sure how to make the beans soften more, they seam really hard, but maybe that's 'cause i'm used to baked beans in a can? I added a little brown sugar and KC BBQ sauce to the recipe. The sauce was good but the beans were a little harder than I expected.

Sunday Lunch and Dinner

Lunch I ended up having leftovers 'cause I was planning on making the baked beans and squash for lunch, but baked beans takes 3 hours, and I didn't have three hours between church and lunch, so I just had leftovers. Dinner I followed as planned. For 608 Calories I'm FULL!!! Apple Pie, roast and rolls. I didn't even have seconds and I could POP! Everything turned out great except for the rools. they are a little dense, I think I killed the yeast. On an up note I made a successful pie!!! I'm always scared of pies...now I just have to find space for leftovers in my refrigerator....I'm working on drinking some cherry juice (ew) to help me sleep. I'm also working on the FlyLady plan. One of the women at my church blogged about this. I always feel overwhelmed by cleaning. I didn't grow up in a spotless house or anything, so it's hard to get in the habit. Wish me luck!

Breakfast Sunday

I don't know what happened! I was so excited to wake up witht some good, creamy oatmeal and a piece of coffee cake...the coffee cake was dry and the oatmeal was....without oats? I had to stir some quick oats into my oatmeal to thicken it up! I guess that will give me a couple more servings of oatmeal. I'm going to need to stop by the dollar store today after church to get some sort of container to store ALL the excess oatmeal in, and cleaning out my refrigerator is quickly becoming a weekly chore.

Saturday

Brunch: Ended up going to brunch with a new friend. Yay for making friends! I finally somewhat am starting to feel settled in Kansas City. I had Artichoke spread on Wheat toast with an egg that was cooked to look like a balloon or something. I've never had an egg like that before.
Dinner: Didn't get home from grocery shopping until near four so I didn't have time to make the baked beans....will have leftovers from last night.
Grocery shopping today did NOT save me ANY money. I've already gone over budget for the MONTH...by 3 dollars...but still. I hope I can ration most of these ingredients over the next 4 weeks. This sucks. I hate being poor. :(

Taking the Edge Off

Thus far I have lost 6lbs!
I'm in a particularly bad mood. Both my work life and my personal life have been totally crazy and my mind has been turned upside down, so I determined that it was time for some baking therapy.
I've been wanting to make these raspberry muffins. I bought some raspberries, I hate buying fresh fruit simply because if you don't buy organic, it tastes like you're being fumigated, if you DO buy organic you have to eat them like it's the second coming. So anyway, I bought these raspberries and in two days, they went bad. So I ended up using frozen raspberries. I was just about to make these muffins, when I realized that the recipe called for buttermilk, but I didn't have buttermilk, I only had milks. I looked for a substitution for buttermilk. Tip: Sub for buttermilk 1tbsp white wine vinegar with 3/4 cup milk.
Magnificently RICH and moist muffins! 6 of them, each one 260 cal. You can eat a muffin and have some yogurt for breakfast and your still under 400 calories!!!

My crisp wasn't very crispy

I am trying to live a healthy lifestyle. Eating less fats, cooking more of my own meals....eating 1600 calories a day. Going for hour long walks, training for a 5k in October...
I've lost over 3lbs now (Whoot! Go me!)
So today I was going to clean my house, and make meals for the rest of the week...I succeeded in cleaning my dinning room and my kitchen, two loads of laundry, almond covered chicken tenders and peach and blueberry crisp. The chicken tenders were YUMMY! Still waiting to eat the crisp...but it didin't come out crispy?!!? I was running back and forth between my computer and the kitchen to get the recipe (instead of printing it off like a smart person would do) so i might have put too much butter into the topping is all I can think of..I DID learn that to peal a peach you need to drop the peach in boiling water for 30 seconds then run it over cold water, THEN you peal it with a pearing knife...it's pretty slick!!
Addendum Sept 7th: I realized I didn't put the oatmeal in my topping that's why my crisp didn't come out crispy

Across the United States

I've been traveling, so no cooking. I went through both of my grandmothers collections of recipe books and the only thing semi-interesting I could find was an old Wilton cake decorating book. P.S I walked into my grandma's kitchen in California (she changes kitchen theme's ALL the time) guess what her kitchen theme was? Chocolate!!! Just like mine. She wanted to give me all of her chocolate stuff, but I told her to send it to me when she decided to change her kitchen. It was CRIZAZZY!

I'm sitting at my best friends house right now with the dog. Trying to figure out my plan for when I return home. The first thing I want to do is try a 10 day vegetarian challenge. I also need to purge my refrigerator. I have discovered that purging the refrigerator and pantry needs to be a weekly routine BEFORE you go to the grocery store. The only problem is time....
My goal before Thanksgiving is to make a few successful pies COMPLETELY from scratch the old fashioned way. I'll have to bring them to school to be eaten. Pie crusts scare me and I'll need to get a rolling pin. I have been successful at the fillings...so I will begin the giant leap into pie crusts...I think I need to get a hold of this book  http://www.amazon.com/Retro-Pies-Collection-Celebrated-Recipes/dp/1888054794 and this book http://www.amazon.com/Retro-Baking-Classic-Contest-Winners/dp/1888054956

P.S I am DEFINITELY planning on having a Harry Potter Party for when the new Harry Potter movie comes out. Stay tuned for updates.

String, Cloth, Tin and Things

I haven't been cooking a lot lately because I've been trying to open a community production of "The Sound of Music." So I haven't been home for breakfast, lunch/or dinner.....the show opened this weekend.
I HAVE been sewing and Crocheting though. (I rode the train home for my birthday. You'd be amazed how much you can do on a five hour train ride when you are not interrupted by phone calls, the television or your cats.) I made this cardigan in pink:

I've also been working on this bag:
The only problem is, the pattern is a little weird, so I've had to take it out several times. So it's not finished. Sad Day!
I sewed a swimsuit cover up from a 60's pattern my grandma gave me a while back, it was WAAAY too long so I have to shorten it. But the whole ensemble I'm making to coordinate with my swimsuit this year:
No. I'm not bleached blonde and REEEdiculously skinny. But the suit is just flattering and OH SO Cute!
So that's the first ensemble I've been working on.

The second outfit I recently bought for a Gala I'm going to in Pittsburgh in about a week and a half. There is are a TON of vintage clothing stores on the strip by my house, Donna's Dress Shop in particular is one of my favorites. I bought a 1960's purple cocktail dress with a grey belt. Now all I need are some grey heels to go with it.

For my birthday, my friend Sheila an I went Antique shopping, she bought me some yellow retro cannisters for my kitchen. I <3 them!

I bought a cookbook Entitled "the way to a man's heart Your Gas Range Cook Book" I love vintage and quirky cookbooks. I have about 7 or 8 of them now. This one has really fun illustrations, and the title just cracks me up.
Sheila also got me a much needed set of kitchen knives. Now all I need is a rolling pin, and a couple specialty pans. I so want a casserole dish, and would collecting jello molds be completely crazy? For the fourth of July I attempted the layered jello in a parfait dish. It just doesn't look as positively *lovely* as the jello in the mold now does it?

Bringing you up to Speed

The beginning of my experiment started at the end of the school year. I posted these on facebook:

May 20th Sarah Varley Is trying to cook a 1950's menu to see if it will save money.

May 21st Sarah Varley Just cleaned her kitchen. And when I say cleaned I mean took everything out of the fridge, drawers, cupboards rearranged everything according to Martha Stewart and Real Simple and scrubbed everything down!!! Tomorrow I conquer the Rest of the House (Except the twilight zone that is my walk in closet, that undertaking will happen after school gets out.)

May 22nd Sarah Varley Spent about $68 between Aldi's and Walmart to begin my 1950's week of menu's experiment. I forgot two things: tomatoes and a cookie crust. I'm pretty sure this will provide me with meals for the next week and a half if not longer. The experiment begins

Today's Menu: Breakfast: French Toast w/ Syrup and Juice. Lunch: Fried Potatoes and eggs with Carrots and Cookies. Dinner: Cheese Soufle (I'm scared of making a soufle...about as scared as I am of making pies!!!!!!!) Beans and Strawberry Shortcake (making cupcakes so I can alternate throughout the week) My cold is getting worse.

Breakfast was easy and didn't take a lot of time. I decided to use my Mrs. Butterworth instead of my good Maple Syrup...something about using a bottle shaped like a maple leaf if I ever have company, makes me want to save it. :P Lunch was a little more difficutl. I didn't start the cookies soon enough. :( So I'm waitin...g one more hour for them to refrigerate before I can cook them. I actually used this recipe for my eggs and potatoes: http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Fried-Eggs-with-New-Potatoes-Bacon-and-Spinach-5363 though I didn't have spinach. Would have been better with spinach. I kinda felt like a man eating potatoes eggs and bacon for lunch...but I DID have carrots!!!

And ALDi's and Walmart WINS!!! as much as I HATE Walmart, I just stoped by Sunfresh to pick up those last items, spent more than I spent at Aldi's and got half the stuff?! Ummmm THAT's where my money has been going!!! Wish I could support my neighborhood grocery store...but we're in a recession here people!

Okay...soufle didn't rise or poof or whatever you call. Apparently, non stick pans do not allow soufle's to poof. Also. I didn't beat my egg whites to hard peaks. I beat them to soft peaks. I think they are supposed to be hard peaks. Eating my desert for the night.

May 23rd Todays Menu: Breakfast: Coffee Cake and Cereal. Lunch Peanut Butter Sandwiches with Bananas and Cookies. Dinner: Was supposed to be meatloaf, BUT I hate touching red meat so I'm going to put that one off until SOMEONE (my boyfreind ♥) comes over to mix it up for me so instead I'll have leftovers of noodles in a cream s...auce with tomatoes and my leftover strawberry shortcake from last night.See More

June 12 When your bacon doesn't fit in the frying pan... Is the pan too small or the bacon to large?

Conclusion: Cooking like this DID save me money, but it DID NOT help me lose weight.

So now I'm on a diet, trying to lose the weight I gained in this experiment and then some. 4 meals of 400 calories a day. Can I do this on Retro Recipes?
